Xavier University, Science Center Building SC 203, Cagayan de Oro City

Workshop Location: XU Science Center Building, Corales Ave, C.d.O.

Outline

The proposed workshop serves as an introductory course in systematics, where local and international experts train the participants in taxonomy of selected groups of common macroinvertebrates. This year, main attention is given to major aquatic insect orders (Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera), freshwater snails (Caenogastropoda), and freshwater decapods (Brachyura, Caridea). Lectures will introduce to Philippine rand SE Asian representatives of these taxa. During a full-day fieldtrip the participants will be trained in organismic field sampling of several habitats and their macroinvertebrate communities. This field trip will serve as a source of data and material for subsequent laboratory work. During the laboratory sessions, the participants will learn to identify and diagnose the different taxa. Relevant literature will be provided. Current standards and trends in arthropod taxonomy will be discussed.
